This article will look at the various house designs in Nigeria. Pictures and descriptions of these designs are shown for your view.
Nigerian houses are usually built according to users’ preferences which could be residential, commercial, recreational or industrial. The exact need of users at a particular time forms the decision of developers and real estate investors on the type, nature and design of houses to build in a particular neighbourhood.
We will look at the various houses in no specific order:
Tenement houses are public houses also known as face-me-i-face-you buildings where multi-tenancy is practiced. The tenants share facilities in common including toilets, bathrooms and the premises. This type of building is usually built in high-density areas where very poor people live. It is affordable and has mild property rules.
Bungalows are usually built for small families of between 3 to 5 members. It is built in 3, 4 or 5 bedrooms which could be either detached or semi-detached, sometimes terraced depending on the design and user preference. Semi-detached and terraced bungalows are built for families that want to share facilities with others.
Block of Flats:
These are building blocks comprising different units or apartments on each floor separated by walls and sometimes stairwells. The apartments all have their own facilities such as toilets, bathrooms and kitchens. The block of flats ranges between 4 to 8 flats in a block. One-storey buildings (2 floors) usually have 4 flats, two stories (3 floors) with 6 flats while 3-storey buildings (4 floors) all have at least 8 flats.
Block of Self-contain Apartments:
These are building blocks with several separate units of self-contained apartments having their private kitchens, toilets and showers. It is mostly built in such a way that each apartment faces the other but is separated by sometimes wide corridors. The number of apartments in this type of building block is only limited to the space allotted for the development of the subject building. It ranges between 4 to 200 units in a building.
Duplexes are stand-alone or detached houses built on at least two floors with a living room, guest bedroom, kitchen, dining and guest toilets on the ground floor while the first floor comprises the master bedroom, madam’s bedroom, children’s rooms and other rooms according to the building design. It is usually built for a single family of at least 2 persons. The ground and first floors are normally connected by a common staircase or lift for multiple floors and the rooms are parted by common walls.
